West Shore AWARE Announces New SHS Scholarship
The West Shore AWARE Scholarship Board is pleased to announce a new initiative that will further enhance educational opportunities for graduates of Saugatuck High School (SHS).
Beginning this spring, meritorious college-bound SHS grads may apply for an annual $2,500 AWARE scholarship to pursue higher education at the college or university of their choice.
Saugatuck Scholarship Foundation President Anne Corlett, said of the new scholarship, “We are thrilled that once again our community is stepping up to demonstrate its commitment to our young people and their education. The AWARE Scholarship represents the best spirit of the amazing place in which we live.”
Since 2004 West Shore AWARE, a philanthropic organization of gay men, women, and their allies in the Saugatuck-Douglas community, has raised more than $400,000 to benefit area not-for-profit agencies, highlighting the participation and contribution of gay citizens to community life.
In 2007 AWARE established the Scholarship Fund to provide support for education, and since that time, AWARE has established a $60,000 endowment at Grand Valley State University that will annually and in perpetuity provide funding for two scholarships for GVSU students. The Saugatuck High School scholarship is AWARE’s most recent educational effort, placing its philanthropic focus directly on our local community.
Taking its place alongside other community scholarships, the AWARE Scholarship will be administered by the Saugatuck Scholarship Foundation in partnership with the Allegan County Community Foundation. Applications for the annual, renewable scholarship (for college enrollment in Fall 2013) are now being accepted, and the first recipient will be announced on May 14 at the annual Academic Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Saugatuck Scholarship Foundation, at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts.
Application information and forms are available on the Saugatuck Public Schools’ website www.saugatuckps.com or that of the Allegan County Community Foundation www.alleganfoundation.org.
