SPS Presents Avant-Garde Production Of "Little Shop Of Horrors" Feb. 27-28
A completely retooled, avant-garde production of the beloved musical Little Shop Of Horrors is about to land right here on planet Earth (more specifically right here in Saugatuck Michigan) and it’s going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
The production is being directed by Broadway veteran Tom Zemon and music directed by Tim Heck of the Lakeshore Community Chorus with choreography by Dance Asylum owner Justine Kolev.
Ginger Boerman is creating the sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening costumes for this production which will transport the audience to a place where their entire perspective is challenged.
Shane Lynn has created the graphics for the production.
“We’re really hoping to blow everybody’s mind with this production”, said director Zemon. “We’ve taken the idea of the “plant” and completely refocused our storytelling on what the plant represents rather than the physical plant itself.
“We don’t want to give away too much but framing the show within this conceit is going to provide for an extremely thought-provoking experience for the kids as well as an innovative and entertaining experience for the audience.
“We’ve tried to include as much of the student body as possible.”
Vince Heyser of the Industrial Arts program has worked tirelessly with his kids to create much of the set.
Nicole Bauman has worked with a group of her students to create an ambitious video project that will be a part of the production. Ms. Danielle Hanna has been working with her students to create the powerful and mysterious “plant”, and while nearly all of the cast are students, we even have a teacher (Mr. Rick Bauer) playing the role of Mr. Mushnik!
This production of Little Shop of Horrors is being presented as an ensemble piece.
The rest of the cast features Thomas Timmerman as Seymour, Baye Lee Braschler as Audrey, Ryan Nye as “The Plant”, Daniel Chalice as The Dentist, Chloe Daniels, Elsie Hayden and Shannon Lynn McKenna as the street urchins/doo-wop girls and an ensemble that plays many, many other roles which includes:
Corbin Blink, Jocelyn Brown, Chloe Cassidy, Ariel Shull, Sophia Distefano, Rose O’Brien, Emily Bird, McKenzie Lorien Boyce, Jenna Braschler, Cole Giles, Emmaleigh Huggins, Ashlee Hunderman, Samantha Johnson, Rachel Roberts and Amber Wingard.
Little Shop of Horrors will be presented at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts on Friday February 27th at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday February 28th at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door or in advance at the SCA box office or at the front office of Saugatuck High School ($10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors).
