Semi-Pro Football Comes To Saugatuck This Saturday (June 21) At SHS
With the new Lake Michigan Havoc semi-pro football team in town, area residents and visitors have another choice for a fun family activity on Saturday nights.
This Saturday (June 21) marks the team’s first home game at Saugatuck High School. This week’s game is against the West Michigan Tigers, out of Kalamazoo.
All home games kick off at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for kids, and free to children who are 6 and under.
A lucky raffle winner at Saturday’s home game will get two tickets to a Chicago Cubs game.
Mike Johnson’s Coral Gables is currently sponsoring the new semi-pro team and other businesses are being sought to support the new sporting venture for Saugatuck.
This weekend is just the start of several home games this summer, which South Haven natives Stephanie and Leo Frazier are hoping will bring their new team some great exposure, support from fans and lots of fun.
The couple started the Lake Michigan Havoc, their first team, this winter and spring.
“My husband, Leo, and I have been involved in semi-pro football for about six years now,” she said. “He was a player and last year I started getting involved on the administrative side.”
The Fraziers noticed a lot of talent in the area which made them think to start their own team that would give guys a chance to play again.
“The purpose of the organization is to give guys who maybe didn’t get to play in college, or did but didn’t go anywhere after that, another avenue to eventually play professionally,” she said.
“This can open doors to playing in an arena, overseas in Europe … it’s really to give another opportunity to these guys that they may not have thought they had.”
Through word-of-mouth and social media, they let people know they were starting the team. By mid-February they started tryouts and ended up with many interested players.
The team belongs to the Great Lakes Football League, which has been around since 2007. They have an eight-week regular season, featuring four home games and four away games.
Before its regular season start, the local team won two pre-season games. Its record now stands at 3-1.
“We have a lot of talent,” Frazier said. “Our team is full of rookies, but they are very talented and I think we can make the playoff run.”
The team has 32 athletes, including an offensive “Fantastic Four” from Saugatuck: Quarterback Brandon Hurst, Wide Receiver Elvis Osby, Halfback Jimal Valentine and Halfback Josh Carter.
The Lake Michigan Havoc will also be playing:
June 28 – Away against Capital City Stealth from Lansing
July 5 – off for holiday
July 12 – Home game at Saugatuck High School against Muskegon Mustangs
July 19 – Home at Saugatuck High School against the Michigan Lions from Kalamazoo
July 26 – Home at Saugatuck High School against the Lakeshore Cougars from Grand Haven
Aug. 2 – Away against the Michigan Lions
“As with any sports team, we want to have a successful season,” she said.
“But we’re also trying to build an organization that’s involved in the community as well.”
For example, in South Haven a few of the guys recently volunteered to help build a playground.
Stephanie and Leo Frazier now live in Grand Rapids with their 3-year-old child and are expecting another baby in August.
