Join The Famous Labor Day Bridge Walk & Help Local Community Rec Program
You do not have to travel all the way to Mackinac this year to join the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk because the Blue Star Bridge Walk will be held in Saugatuck/Douglas to help support Community Recreation.
Saugatuck Public Schools Community Recreation is organizing the 16th Annual Blue Star Bridge Walk on Labor Day, September 1, at 9 a.m. (9:30 a.m. start) as part of the Labor Day Community walks that are held throughout the State of Michigan in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk. Similar to the way the Mighty Mac links Michigan’s two peninsulas, the Blue Star Bridge walk links the communities of Saugatuck and Douglas.
The event started back in 1999 when Judy Anthrop and Bud Baty decided to do their own version of the Mackinaw Bridge Walk right here in Saugatuck/Douglas. Although, on a very smaller scale, the walk has grown over the years to include thousands of walkers, local celebrities, politicians, musicians, Town Crier, women in funny hats, costumes, lots of dogs, local athletic teams, etc.
Local humanitarians have kindly staffed a refreshment stand on the middle of the bridge to rejuvenate the walkers on their “grueling” .19k trek. Rain or shine, the Blue Star Bridge walk has been a great way to celebrate the holiday, come together as a community, and a great way to promote walking for fitness.
The walkers will gather on the south side (Douglas) of Blue Star Bridge and at 9:30 a.m. when the Town Crier will announce the start of the 16th Annual Walk.
Participants will walk over the bridge to the north side (about .19k) and receive their “Certificate of Accomplishment”.
For those looking for a little more exercise, feel free to join the Saugatuck/Douglas Trekkers Hiking Club.
They will meet at 8 a.m. at the Respite Cappuccino Court, (48 Center Street), and walk a 3- to 4-mile route through Douglas and Saugatuck returning to the Blue Star Highway bridge in time to start the Bridge walk at 9:30 a.m.
Before and after the walk Saugatuck Public Schools Community Recreation will be selling t-shirts to help fund our scholarship program for children to participate in community recreation programs.
