IT'S OFFICIAL: Saugatuck Voted "The Best Coastal Small Town In America" In Nationwide Contest
USA Today has announced that Saugatuck, “The Art Coast of Michigan”, has won top honors in the publication’s nationwide reader’s choice award to determine “The Best Coastal Small Town in America.”
The contest sponsored by USA Today began on February 16, 2015 and ended on Monday March 16, 2015 at 12:00 noon.
Results were announced at noon Wednesday (March 18).
This is the second time that Saugatuck has won national recognition from this major publication.
In 2014 the community was voted the “Best Weekend Getaway in the USA”.
According to Felicia Fairchild, executive director of the Saugatuck-Douglas Visitors Bureau, “This is the highest national honor our community has received and we are grateful to the editors of USA Today for nominating Saugatuck to compete among such a prestigious list of prominent coastal destinations.”
She gives credit for the victory to the amazing number of people who participated in this race.
Supported by the voting power of thousands of enthusiastic Saugatuck fans and customers throughout the U.S. & abroad, plus many organizations, the local media, Governor Rick Snyder and the Pure Michigan team, the tiny West Michigan community soared from 20th place into 1st place during the first week of the competition.
Saugatuck held on to the lead despite several heart-pounding encounters with determined competitors.
“We are thrilled that Saugatuck has earned this title from USA Today,” said Fairchild.
“From the charming downtown to award-winning Oval Beach, there is so much for visitors to see and do,” said David West, vice president of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, in congratulating Saugatuck for receiving the coveted title of ‘The Best Coastal Small Town In America’.
“This recognition is further proof that Michigan’s beach towns along our freshwater coastline are attracting attention and visitors on a national level.”
Fairchild pointed out that Saugatuck was the only Midwestern destination as well as the only fresh water coastal community to be nominated for this competition by a panel of professional travel writers selected by USA Today.
“It was also the first Great Lakes location to be included in a national coastal competition recognizing that Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes are inland fresh water oceans with surf, ship-wrecks, sandy beaches and lovely coastal resort towns,” she said.
Fairchild was instrumental in leading the successful voting effort.
Saugatuck & Douglas are reaching out to express their heart-felt thanks to everyone who helped vote the community into first place.
Plans are underway to sponsor a town-wide “Victory Party” for everyone who voted for Saugatuck.
The celebration is being scheduled for the weekend after Labor Day.
