Thirteen years ago Hearts for the Homeless sleep in’ers slept in card board boxes. Jane Van Dis, now 93 years old, says she slept under banquet tables with a tarp over her.
The event began by the gazebo in Allegan by the river. Now Hearts for the homeless is staged in Saugatuck’s Red Barn Theater’s grassy courtyard.
The whole point of this fundraiser is to give participants a taste of what it might feel like to be homeless, says Van Dis.
When sleepers get sponsors like a walk-a-thon or similar event this raises money for the HRC to help the county’s homeless. Individual businessmen and business women are major sponsors. Local area businesses are being canvassed for money and items for the auction.
Please be generous and help the homeless!
